Tazkiyat Al-Nafs
When a person's heart is veiled then it is prevented from
achieving perfection and glory, because of that it is necessary to perform Tazkiyat Al-Nafs. Tazkiyat Al-Nafs is a process of human spiritual cleansing
from things that prevent a person from achieving the perfection of `Ubudiyyah
which is the original purpose of human existence. Human success in doing Tazkiyat Al-Nafs will lead to success in life in this world and also in the
hereafter. Allahﷻ has explained this fact in His words:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا. وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسَّاهَا
Meaning: "Verily (will) succeed the one who cleans himself
(spiritually) and (will) lose the one who defiles him"
Allahﷻ has explained that one of the purposes of Rasulullahﷺ mission is to perform tazkiyat al-nafs. This statement can be
seen in the words of Allahﷻ:
هُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولًا مِنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آَيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ
وَإِنْ
كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ
"Meaning: "It is He (Allah) who has sent among the Ummi people
a messenger from among themselves who recites His verses to them, cleanses them
(Tazkiyah), and teaches them the Book (the Qur'an) and wisdom (hadith) and those
before that were really in clear error."
